Art Deco 1925 – 1940
Whilst strictly speaking, a part of the Inter War Period, Art Deco became very popular between 1925 and 1940. The appeal of this style was that its sleek, clear lines were well in keeping with the rejection of previous ornate and overworked styles. This new style was sophisticated and functional and beautiful too. As life became busier and more complex, architecture became simpler and more alluring. The glamour of the art deco style was romanticised in film, in popular fiction and in the style choices of the rich and famous.
It was at its peak of popularity in the Roaring Twenties and in America until the 30’s. The Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building are classic examples of the Art Deco style of architecture.
