Located on High Street in the heart of Oatlands historic precinct is the Commandant’s residence.
This residence was constructed by soldiers of the Royal Staff Corps and now forms part the Oatlands Military Complex which is listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register. In the nineteenth century, the Complex itself served for both military and penal purposes.

The original residence constructed in 1828 is a single storey sandstone Old Colonial Georgian building with a pitched hipped roof. Extensions were carried out which saw the original residence being enveloped in the later Federation period.

This seamless integration of the two periods effortlessly flows from room to room with a substantial balance of the Federation extensions. All external and internal walls have been constructed in sandstone and measure half a metre thick.

The residence, because of its room configuration, is well suited as a private residence or as a combined residence offering short term B&B accommodation. There may be additional opportunities for the current hobby room to be used as a boutique retail area or as a consulting room (STCA).
