Tasmanian Georgian Treasure

SLATE COTTAGE c.1836 - This Old Colonial Georgian cottage has an alluring appeal within the streetscape of Bothwell and is an impressive example of architectural enhancement to a town cottage. Most notable is the buildings’ slate roof and concave iron roof over veranda. The symmetrical facade of the building is accentuated by the division of the veranda pillars into five bays, one of which forms a timber and glass pavilion.

The four masonry lintels and impost, together with the cedar joinery of the windows, door and fanlight, present a strong yet understated character to the entry of the cottage.

Within the front rooms of the cottage there is an extensive use of cedar with reeded detail to the window and door casings as well as the fireplace surrounds. The joiner has also constructed cedar bookcases to the alcoves either side of the fireplaces.
The kitchen and bathroom facilities, although of a latter period, compliment the character of cottage while delivering today’s functionality. A spacious dormer has increased the floor area and in doing so now offers the opportunity to reconfigure the living and bedroom spaces to suit individual owner requirements.

The part acreage allotment offers practical space for rural endeavours as well as providing for residential privacy and includes a large outbuilding for use as a garage or multi-purpose facility.
